This is a busy week at Westwood School! Make sure you check our weekly memo, you can see it below: After reading Bernelda Wheeler’s Where Did You Get Your Moccasins? and The Bead Pot, written by Thelma Poirier, the students in Mrs. Janisch’s grade 4 class were excited to make their own paper moccasins. Some of the students even wore their own moccasins for the day! This was a great activity to support our learning and inquiry of the traditional homes of Canada’s Indigenous peoples.
Ms. McCartney’s class finished their water inquiry unit with a scavenger hunt! Student had to follow clues to find each water fact. Each card emphasized a lesson learned about the importance of clean and accessible water! Students were so excited!
Ms. McCartney’s grade fives loved their math lesson using math facts. They had to create puzzles with matching facts! Team work and focus were required!
The Grade 2N class continued their year-long Kindness theme by making sandwiches for the Thompson Homeless Shelter. The students each brought in their own ingredients and made the food themselves! We made over 70 sandwich lunches for the people of Thompson. Thank-you to the students and parents/guardians of 2N for helping to spread kindness throughout our community!
We had an amazing day at the Grade 8 Northern Young Women's Conference on March 5th, 2019 and the Northern Skilled Trades and Technology Showcase on March 6th, 2019. All Grade 8 students had the opportunity to attend one of the days. There were a variety of different sessions where the students were able to try high tech equipment, and even make a name plate during the carpentry session. There was a STEM challenge in the afternoon where the students were able to demonstrate and grow their abilities in co-operation while attempting new skills. The Westwood Girls team came first in the STEM challenge. Some of our favourite stations were with the special mentors from Vale, Hydro and Emergency Services. These stations were very rich and shared specific knowledge. During the Northern Young Women's Conference some of our students even tried on all the firefighting gear. We also learned about the apprenticeship program offered at RDPC which was very exciting knowledge for some. Our students displayed wonderful manners, total engagement, learned a multitude of new information and simply loved giving things a try.
Cyber SafetyBe aware of what your young people are watching, have them use the internet in a common space. Have a conversation with young people about what to do if they do come across upsetting content online. Let your child know that they can come to you when they find something upsetting and they won’t get in trouble. Remember some upsetting content can come as a pop up in games or even on videos which were created for children. If you or your child comes across this type of content report it to the platform that it’s on. If your child is expressing any concerning feelings, follow up with mental health services for support.
When asked what they wanted to learn about water, the students in Mrs. Janisch’s grade 4 class all agreed they wanted to know how water came to be on Earth. Quite the topic to research for 9 and 10 year olds! With the help of Ms. Drebit, one of the district’s literacy support teachers, we were able to find out some answers. After watching videos and reading articles, students learned that asteroids were likely the reason water ended up on Earth. They represented their learning in many ways: making posters, models, a news broadcast, and a book. After the presentations, it was evident that students were left with many more complex questions to investigate.

Our 4-6 Choir performed at the School Board meeting on February 26. They sang “Man in the Mirror” as part of our year-long school-wide water inquiry project. They were quite awesome and we are so proud of them!
The grade fives had a read-a-thon on February 22nd. The fundraiser was to help with expenses for our Paint Lake field trip. Our read-a-thon had a camping theme. We built tents and forts to read in! Ms. McCartney made a campfire area to read around and a fish pond to catch gummy fish and gummy worms! It was awesome!!! We even invited our book buddies to share in the experience.
Grades 2-5 Vikings were lucky enough to attend Munchtopia at RDPC. It was fun and entertaining. Students were even included in the performance and got to go on stage with the actors!
Ms. McCartney’s grade fives are learning all about Matter. Today we compared the characteristics and properties of various liquids. It’s a tough job, but Aiden was up to the challenge!
Thank you Constable Cleveland who came to read with our students today for I LOVE TO READ month! Here he is, reading with 2N!
The week of February 4-8 recognizes the contributions of the School Counselling Profession to the personal, social, educational and career development, and the mental health and wellbeing, of all students in Canada. Staff and students would like to take this opportunity to express a sincere thank you to Mrs. Steeves for the important role she plays in supporting student success at Westwood. |
